If you live in Australia or have recently had the opportunity to visit Australia, you have probably seen an environmentally friendly alternative to taxis and cars: the pedicab.
But what do you know exactly about pedicabs or rickshaws? Human power is not new to transport, especially in the east, however these simple vehicles have become something a little different in this part of the world. They are very efficient in urban areas, having the ability to make you enjoy a new perspective of the city, they are more intimate, experiential and fun.
When I was visiting Cairns and Newcastle I saw passengers getting onto the pedicabs. I could see how much the customers were enjoying themselves. The pedicab drivers are guys and girls with a sunny and talkative temperament and when they have some passengers they try to give them the most fun experience with music, information about the city and recommendations on things to do and see,… It’s work where personality and interaction is the most important thing. Passengers don’t want only to sit and look around, they want to talk, they have questions and they expect answers; people on the side of the road and out from bars and clubs try to talk with pedicabbers; drivers of cars wind down the windows to talk as well.
I started to realise that this is not only a passenger service but a way to turn cities into a bright and happy place. I liked what I saw so much that I have decided to give it a try. I have joined Down Under Pedicabs. At the Down Under Pedicabs base in Cairns the pedicab drivers have a house to share so everybody, including travellers, can try to work here. Once I arrived here I felt immediately at home because all the team was very friendly and welcoming. This is a great way to make friends and I feel like the friendships I make here will be long lasting.
We work mainly during the evening because its busier then day and its not too hot. As a bonus it also means we have a lot of free time during the day. We put that time to good use though, sometimes we organize trips out of Cairns for exploring some of the amazing spots around here. Last time we went to visit Josephine falls, located about 1 hour from Cairns. I must say that the atmosphere and the view there was incredible and breathtaking. It has been a beautiful day to remember in the future.
We don’t go out every day, sometimes we are tired from the night time work so we just chill in the garden area of the house, play pool or watching tv. Some evening, before going to work, we organize big dinners where each of us takes a turn to cooking. We eat well but I have to say that after 2 weeks of pedalling I have lost already some weight and my body is more lean and fit I couldn’t ask more! This is a way to combine fitness and fun!
Well that’s all for now. I’ll let you know how the next few weeks pan out.
I want to thank the guy that took the pictures of the Pedicabs, Nikita Zinovkin.
